For the past few years, my wife and I have spoken at a Christian marriage retreat for high school and college coaches and their spouses. This past year during a break after one of the sessions, a coach and his wife stopped my wife and me. Then the coach asked where I ran track in college. I told him I had been at Cal Poly.
“I remember you!” he replied with excitement. “I ran for a Division II college in New Mexico and I remember seeing this fast Asian kid at a track and field meet. There weren’t a lot of Asian sprinters, so you stood out. I remember you!” To give you context, I ran track 30 years ago. I was blown away that someone remembered me from three decades ago. What set me apart was my ethnicity.
As followers of Jesus, we all have an opportunity to be set apart. You know what sets us apart and makes us memorable according to Jesus? Our love for one another. Jesus tells us this Himself in John 13:35: “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
When we sacrificially seek God’s best for those we love, people will know we are followers of Jesus and it will set us apart. So today, ask God to help you love others like He loves you. Sacrifice some time, energy or money to show someone that you love them with Christ’s love.
