Patience is one of the fruits of the Spirit necessary in life and the world of athletics. It seems like we are always waiting on something. Waiting to find out if you made the team, waiting to hear back on a job offer, waiting on the test results. Having patience during a waiting period is impossible without God, but with God we are able to persevere because we can have faith in His plan for our lives. Patience can be tested further when the waiting is done, but the result was not what you wanted.

How quick are you to get upset when the ref makes a bad call? How often do you turn to anger before understanding? “Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing” (1 Peter 3:9). We have to be intentional and work hard at being patient, seeking God’s constant guidance and honestly self-assessing when and where we fall short.

Trusting God means believing that His plan and timing are always best. If we’re constantly worried and impatient, we’re not fully trusting Him. Look at Jesus: He was incredibly patient and kind with His disciples, and He shows that same patience toward us. He forgives us for our mistakes by taking the blame on Himself. Instead of condemnation, He offers us grace.

His patience helps us be more patient with ourselves and others. We can bring that patience to the field, court, front office and home.
