“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” — Colossians 3:1-2

In Game 6 of the 2003 Stanley Cup Finals, a single hit shook the entire hockey world. As Anaheim Mighty Ducks captain Paul Kariya attempted to skate into the offensive zone, New Jersey Devils captain Scott Stevens leveled him.
This infamous hit left Kariya on the ice unconscious for nearly a minute, and to this day Kariya says he doesn’t remember it. What made the hit so brutal was Kariya had his head down and never saw Stevens coming. He was vulnerable and couldn’t protect himself. Blindside hits like this are the reason why every hockey player is taught to “keep your head up” when on the ice. When your head is down, it’s only a matter of time before you get hurt.
This principle applies to our faith journey as well. If your mind is set on the things of this world, you are spiritually vulnerable and can’t protect yourself. You also run the risk of missing what God is doing, which is just as devastating.
This is why the apostle Paul shares in Colossians 3:1-4 that we are to seek the things above, where Jesus and His Kingdom are. In other words, we must keep our head up. With your head up and eyes locked on Jesus, you won’t get blindsided by the circumstances of life. Better yet, you will also find yourself perfectly positioned to step into whatever God has planned for you.
Wherever you find yourself today, it’s never too late to lift your head up and keep it there.
