Daily Devotional: Friday, March 28 - Know The Voice

“When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” — John 10:4-5

For athletes in any sport, at any level, recognizing the voice of their coach is essential in the heat of competition. Even in the roar of the crowd, the chatter of teammates, and the intensity of the moment, players can still pick out their coach’s voice. Why? Because they’ve spent time with them — listening, learning and trusting their guidance. But why does that matter?

A winning coach knows more than just the basics of the game. They’ve studied the opponent. They understand the strengths, weaknesses and tendencies of the other team. They’ve already mapped out a strategy for victory. Listening to the coach’s voice isn’t just helpful; it’s often the difference between success and failure.

In the same way, hearing God’s voice is vital to our very existence. Why is it so critical? John 10 reminds us that Jesus is our shepherd. Just like sheep instinctively follow their shepherd because they know his voice, we are designed to follow and to hear God. The relationship between a shepherd and his flock is built on trust and familiarity — the absolute same relationship God desires with us.

We were created to know His voice. The truth is, God is always speaking. The question is, are we actively listening?

When life happens — when the pressure is on and chaos threatens to sink us — it’s His voice that will anchor us and lead us through. Just like a well-prepared coach calls out instructions from the sidelines, God speaks with wisdom, strategy and love. He already knows what lies ahead. He sees the enemy’s tactics (John 10:10). And He has already prepared the path to victory.

Jesus Christ is the ultimate head coach in our lives. The key to recognizing His voice? Spend time with Him. Listen. Learn. Trust. Obey. Because in the moments that matter most, His voice is the only one that matters.
