I coached my son’s baseball team for a few years, and after every game, before we left the dugout, I would always remind them to “leave it better than you found it.” That little thought process was instilled in me by my parents as I grew up: Always make sure when you leave a place that you don’t leave it having done anything that could negatively hinder you. I often refer to this as “legacy” and what you leave behind for others to see.
Proverbs 22:1 teaches us, “A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.” The writer of this proverb is reminding us that if you measure your life only by the riches you can gain, then you will be very disappointed. Rather, we should major in character — because a good name will follow you for a lifetime, even after the Lord calls you to your Heavenly home!
I tell young men often, as we are walking out of the locker room to go play a game, that they are representing not only the team name on the front of the jersey, but also the family name on the back. And even more than that, we are representing the Lord who has permanently changed our life because of the promise that we have in Him.
So as you step onto the playing field or into the classroom or the office, make sure you are leaving a positive legacy for the world to see.
