It is the nature of sport that only one team or individual wins a contest. When we win it is easy to praise God for the victory, but what about when we are not on the winning team? We have put in the hard work only to walk away disappointed and discouraged. Praising God is the last thing on our minds.

In the Book of Habakkuk, the prophet surveys his situation and finds it dismal. There is no fruit on the trees nor on the vines. There is no harvest in the field. The flocks and herds will likely not survive. In the midst of this, Habakkuk says, “Yet I will rejoice in the Lord” (3:18). What is it in which he can rejoice? The prophet turned his eyes from his circumstances and rejoiced in God Himself. Life is uncertain but God is unchangeable (Malachi 3:6). God remains in control even when life seems out of control. He is aware of all our situations, and He cares.

We may not understand or like our circumstances, but we can praise God for who He is (Psalm 150:1-6). When we do, our faith increases and our perspective improves. Instead of being pulled down, we can rise up and press on.

To do this, we must familiarize ourselves with the truth about who God is. I encourage you to dig into God’s Word, the Bible, and note what you learn about the character of God. Then, in both good and tough times, turn to God in praise.
