“His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.” — 2 Peter 1:3

An Olympic athlete was doing an interview following her event in which she had surprisingly won a medal, and she was sharing with the press what exactly had helped her overcome her nerves and challenges in order to get it done that day. She came back to something her coach said beforehand that had given her the confidence she needed. He had told her, “What you’ve got is enough. Trust that.” She realized she needed to focus on her own race and believe the talent and training she had would be enough to give her a chance to succeed and win. Remembering that, she said, helped her through the event.
This got me thinking about how we, as Christians, have been given “everything we need for a godly life” (2 Peter 1:3). Because of the finished work of the Lord Jesus on our behalf, we don’t have to worry anymore about if we are enough or if we have what it takes to live this life of faith and fulfill our God-given assignment. In and of ourselves, we know we don’t have it. We’re broken people with no hope of redemption apart from Christ. But in Christ, we have been granted access to the unlimited resources of grace, along with the presence of the Holy Spirit, which equips us “for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:17) that He has laid out for us. We get to run our own race and do so with confidence because God has provided all things for us that pertain to this walk of faith.
Sometimes I think we live as though we’re still under that old mindset of not being enough or not having enough when it comes to doing life with God. Instead of realizing that we now live under the abundance of God’s provision and with 24/7 access to the resources of all that He is and has, we choose to settle for crumbs rather than accept His open invitation to an everlasting feast. We are content with too little. We forget the vastness of Whom we are dealing with and the fact that all that necessitates a Godly life is available to us on a silver platter for our taking. And we get to ask for more whenever we need or want it. God cannot run out of anything He offers us.
Perhaps we need to start really believing that what we’ve got is enough. Maybe we need to actually act as if we trust that and live as though it’s true. God didn’t just set our lives in motion and wish us good luck, stepping back and letting it all randomly fall into place and happen as it will. No, He is actively involved in our growth and transformational process, coaching us along the way and reminding us that we’ve got this because He’s got this. We’ve got this together.
Welcome to the wideness of all that is God.
