“Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” — Luke 5:15-16

Of the 17,000 square feet that make up a hockey rink, the most valuable ice is the “open ice.” Having space to move and make plays is extremely important. And while this may seem obvious, it does not come instinctively for most as they learn to play the game.
If you were to watch little kids play, you’d quickly notice the majority are hyper-focused on the puck and clustered together. It’s actually quite comical to watch because the kids have no room to skate, which leads to them constantly falling over each other.
As players grow and develop, so does their hockey IQ and understanding for the game. The best players know how to create space for themselves, allowing for opportunities to have a massive impact on the game.
When Jesus walked the earth 2,000 years ago, crowds followed Him everywhere He went. And while He loved every individual in the crowds, Jesus also understood the importance of creating space for Himself. Many times in the Gospels, we read about Jesus escaping the crowds to spend time alone with God in prayer.
In the same way it’s necessary to create space on the ice to be an impactful player, it’s of even more importance that we create space in our day for God. A daily time of intentional pursuit of the One who guides our steps will set us up for an impactful life. Regardless of how crowded our lives can become, make sure to create space for God every day!
