Daily Devotional: Wednesday, July 23 – Training Camp Faith

“Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” 1 Timothy 4:7-8

There’s nothing glamorous about NFL training camp. It’s early mornings, endless drills, aching bodies and relentless coaching. It’s sweating in the mid-summer heat with no game-day glory in sight. But ask any veteran and they’ll tell you: Championships aren’t won in February. They’re forged in July and August.

There’s a quiet kind of greatness being built in those unseen moments. Repetition becomes muscle memory. Playbooks become instinct. Discipline becomes identity. Trust between teammates and coaches is formed.

And that’s exactly what Paul was getting at when he told Timothy to train himself for Godliness. The Greek word he uses for “train” is “gymnazo,” where we get “gymnasium.” It’s the image of an athlete, stripping off distractions and putting in the work.

Faith, like football, is not just about what people see on Sunday. The real formation happens in the hidden spaces, when no one’s cheering. When it’s just you, the Word and the weight of the world pressing in.

Maybe your life feels like training camp right now. You’re running the same spiritual drills, facing the same temptations, waking up each day wondering if your faith is growing at all. But make no mistake — like fundamentals in sports, spiritual maturity is forged in repetition. Obedience in the quiet prepares you for faithfulness in the spotlight.

So lean into the training. Get in the playbook of Scripture. Build rhythms of grace, even when they feel mundane. Because Godliness isn’t a one-time breakthrough; it’s a lifelong grind. And the Spirit is shaping you, even when you can’t see the progress.

Because one day, the lights will come on. The moment will come. And what was trained for in secret will be revealed in how you live, love and lead.
