“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” — Psalm 23:4

Jim Murphy’s book “Inner Excellence” became an overnight sensation when cameras caught Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown reading it on the sideline last season. One of the book’s chapters is called “The Greatest Opponents You’ll Ever Face.” In it, Murphy describes three “adversaries” he encounters in his work with professional athletes: The Critic, The Monkey Mind and The Trickster.
The Critic judges. The Monkey Mind clutters. The Trickster deceives. Together, they work to destroy a person’s confidence and fill them with doubt and fear instead. Murphy spends the next chapter, “The Daring and the Twilight,” explaining how to overcome these “adversaries.” He writes, “When you realize that every material possession and award you obtain on earth is but a faint glimmer of a life filled with love, wisdom and courage, you’ll crave that fullness of life first and foremost, and let everything else be added to you” (i.e. your success and accolades will all be by-products).
One of Murphy’s main points in the book is that our response to situations is largely shaped by how we view them. Opponents can be an obstacle in our way, or a partner that pushes us in our quest to maximize our abilities. Success can be defined as a specific objective often determined by circumstances outside our control, or a journey of constant self-improvement.
Making sure we see life through the lens of God’s love for us can be extremely helpful in this regard. Psalm 23 is one of the most famous passages in the Bible and a powerful reminder of God’s power and grace. Like many psalms, it is a declaration of faith in God during difficult times. David’s hope and confidence come from his belief that God will never leave his side.
We don’t have to be afraid of the adversity we will inevitably face because we know God will be with us every step of the way. Whatever evil we may encounter, we can rest assured that the Lord has already triumphed. The battle is won. When we are in the valley, God will still be walking alongside us. He keeps chasing after us even if we’re not chasing after Him.
There is also a freedom that comes with surrendering control to God. We don’t have to be defined by any of those things that can so often become idols — money and status, power and influence, acceptance and belonging. God has us exactly where He wants us, and He will provide us with everything we need. We don’t need to be afraid because God is with us.
