“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.” — Romans 8:26

In baseball, one of the most infuriating things that can happen to a batter is to fall into a hitting slump. Oftentimes, a slump will come out of nowhere and can persist for a long period of time. There are numerous reasons to explain why a slump starts. It could be the normal wear and tear of the season, a lingering or undealt-with injury, but sometimes it just happens. Players will do all sorts of different things to get out of a slump, varying from slight tweaks to extreme changes in the things they do.
At some point or another, every baseball player will fall into a hitting slump, whether it be a long-lasting or a short-lived one. The same can be said about every Christian in their walk with the Lord.
To a follower of Christ, a spiritual slump can be a variety of different things. It can feel like current circumstances aren’t producing the results that the Lord — or we — would desire. Maybe God feels distant in a time where guidance or discernment is needed. A slump can feel debilitating, but it won’t last forever. Even if the reason for the slump is unknown, God doesn’t abandon those who come to Him for refuge in times of despair. Romans 8:26 says, “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.”
A slump is a natural part of the Christian walk. The important thing is that through any slump, God is still sovereign over it all and He can use it for good. In a slump, the only way to get out of it is to keep swinging, even if it looks a little different than before. So grab that bat — or Bible — and get back up to the plate.
