In the movie “Miracle,” which depicts the story of the gold medal-winning 1980 U.S. hockey team, there is a famous scene amongst hockey players. It’s when coach Herb Brooks bag skates (a practice where the pucks stay in the bag) the team after the players didn’t take an exhibition game seriously. Brooks shouted “again” for hours, making the players skate till they had nothing left.
It was during these sprints that Brooks said something that has taken on a life of its own: “The legs feed the wolf.” He knew endurance was what made wolves successful hunters, and it would be the factor that separated his team from the rest.
From that moment forward, the players understood they needed to take every opportunity seriously, and be the best conditioned to win the gold. Endurance is only gained by pushing yourself, and while it’s uncomfortable for a moment, the end results are worth it all. This was certainly the case for the 1980 U.S. team.
As a follower of Jesus, endurance is needed to achieve all God has created us for. It’s easy to start something, but those who have the endurance to finish are the ones who experience real victory. It’s worth contemplating the areas in our faith we might not be taking as seriously as we should. And perhaps we need to allow the words of Herb Brooks to motivate us to lock in and build up the endurance we need.
The legs feed the wolf, and endurance produces well-rounded, complete followers of Jesus!
