“We always thank God for all of you and continually mention you in our prayers. We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.” — 1 Thessalonians 1:2-3

I remember starting with a new team as their head coach — they were nervous but excited about the journey ahead. They worked hard through the preseason and quickly bought into our new system and culture. But when they walked into the locker room for our first home game, everything changed.
One by one, they froze, jaws dropped, eyes wide. What were they staring at? In front of each locker was a neatly folded uniform with a handwritten note on top. A simple message of thanks. A personal expression of gratitude for the work they had put in.
I had spent hours writing each note and praying over those uniforms. I wanted them to know they were appreciated — not just for their performance, but for their heart, their effort and their belief in what we were building together. Their reaction was unforgettable. That moment reminded me that gratitude doesn’t have to be grand to be powerful. Sometimes a few honest words can leave a lasting impact.
In 1 Thessalonians 1:2-3, Paul writes, “We always thank God for all of you and continually mention you in our prayers. We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance …”
Paul’s words echo what I felt that day. He took the time to acknowledge the faith, love and perseverance of the Thessalonian church — just as I wanted to acknowledge the commitment of my team. It’s amazing what encouragement can do in the hearts of those we lead.
