“My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” — Galatians 2:20 (NLT)

By nature, none of us like giving up control. “Surrendering” usually carries a negative connotation. An equivalent word used in the Bible is “submitting.”
Tigers player Zach McKinstry recently discussed the challenges and importance of submitting to God in a devotional for Sports Spectrum’s Fall 2025 magazine. To be clear, in no way should the competitive edge be lessened in a Christian athlete seeking to allow God to rule in his or her life. In reality, the freedom found in submitting to God should bring a greater focus and purpose to a competitor. Thousands of professional and amateur athletes demonstrate this on a daily basis.
A genuine relationship with Jesus is built on submission. This principle is stated in Galatians 2:20 (above) and demonstrated in the conversion of the apostle Paul (Acts 9:1-16). Salvation found in Jesus Christ is based on surrendering to Him (Matthew 7:21-23).
Romans 12:1-2 urges all true believers to live out this yield of control on a daily basis. Paul writes, “Therefore, I urge you … to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God — this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
The “offering” part (v. 1) indicates the starting point of one’s relationship with God through submission to Him. The “transforming by the renewing of your mind” (v. 2) is an ongoing affirmation through the ongoing reading of the Word and the prayers of a person living a life submitted to Jesus in all areas.
