“But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect…” — 1 Peter 3:15

For several years, Tigers outfielder Kerry Carpenter has used “This is My Song” by North Point Worship as his walk-up song for every at-bat. The song boldly proclaims one’s relationship with Jesus Christ. Recently, one of Kerry’s teammates, seeking to offer some encouragement, noted to Kerry, “Even if you go 0-for-4 in the game, at least people get to hear about Jesus four times.” The humor was well-received and reminds us about being intentional in sharing the Good News of Jesus with others.
In the last recorded words of Jesus before He ascended to Heaven, He said, “You will be my witnesses” (Acts 1:8). He doesn’t offer it as an option. Rather, we are to embrace it as a responsibility, opportunity and calling. The apostle Paul highlighted this calling by likening our role as witnesses to an ambassador for a country (2 Corinthians 5:20). For the Christian, Heaven is our home country and we represent King Jesus. As ambassadors, we submit to His message, His provisions, His assignments and His directions.
An important part of sharing the Gospel is preparation. Peter emphasizes this in his first letter: “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have” (1 Peter 3:15b).
Learn how to share your story. Memorize certain Bible verses that explain the Gospel. Pray for opportunities to share your faith in Jesus.
