When you’re at a hockey game, there is a strong chance you’ll hear the sound of cowbells ringing throughout the arena. Diehard fans often bring their own, and if you’re lucky enough to attend on a promotional night, you might leave with a team-themed one for your collection.

While it’s a fun aspect of the sport now, cowbells and hockey actually have a rather complicated relationship. Before referees started using the modern whistle, they originally used cowbells to maintain flow and order. So as you could imagine, it became real problematic when fans started ringing cowbells in hopes of disrupting what was taking place on the ice. With all of the noise, players were confused and no longer able to differentiate between the referees’ cowbells and all the others.

Oftentimes in life, it might feel like there is an area full of cowbells ringing. Noises and distractions come from all directions, leaving us in a place where we might struggle to discern God‘s voice. And while this tension is palpable, we can find encouragement in Scripture. In 1 Corinthians 14:33, we are reassured that “God is not a God of confusion but of peace.”

Like the sharp blast of a whistle that now cuts through the noise of even the loudest of cowbells, God‘s voice brings instant clarity to our lives when we listen for Him. Choose today to intentionally listen for God’s voice, and rest in the peace He brings even in the midst of chaos.
