Daily Devotional: Tuesday, February 10 – Getting It Wrong

“Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to obey God’s law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin.” — Romans 7:24b-25 (NLT)

I have a recurring nightmare where I am back in high school playing basketball, getting ready for a big game, and I open my bag to realize I brought the wrong jersey or forgot my jersey altogether. The nightmare continues when I must tell my father, who happens to be the coach. There’s such a terrible feeling when I just can’t seem to get it right.

Have you ever felt that feeling? You are in good company.

Paul describes it this way: “I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate. … I want to do what is right, but I can’t. I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway” (Romans 7:15, 18b-19, NLT).

We can all find ourselves wanting to make the right decisions, yet continuing to give into the temptations in this world and the sin nature we are bent toward. So what do we do? Paul goes on to tell us: “Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 7:24b-25a, NLT).

The God who saves us from the penalty of our sin is the same God who will help us overcome the sin itself. To God be the glory!
