“Those who worship worthless idols forfeit the mercy that could be theirs.” — Jonah 2:8 (NET)

We were at church singing a hymn when a line from the hymn caused me to pause and think. The hymn was “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” by Joseph Scriven. The verse said this: “O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, All because we do not carry, Everything to God in prayer!” The line that caught my attention was “O what peace we often forfeit.” At that point, my mind went to sports.
My middle son’s basketball team almost had to forfeit a game recently. There had been confusion over the game’s start time so several players were late. My mind switched back to the hymn, but not before God used it as a teachable moment.
What victories and opportunities am I forfeiting in my life when I don’t show up for time in God’s Word? Or time in prayer? Or when I ignore those gentle prompts to take some time in the Word? How is it impacting this season in my life? How are my teammates affected (my teammates at this stage in my life being my family and friends, my church, my community), and even more importantly, the Kingdom of God?
I don’t want to forfeit God’s peace in my life or His blessings. I want to show up. In His goodness, He chose me, the least of these, to be on His team. I want to be all in. I can’t do it in my strength, so I find the cheer I’m saying most often is really a prayer — God, I need You.
