Harrison Mevis, the “Thiccer Kicker,” did very well for four years at the University of Missouri as a college kicker. He made more than 83 percent of his kicks, but wasn’t drafted by an NFL team. He signed as a free agent with the Carolina Panthers but was soon cut by the team. Then he spent one season in the lesser known United Football League.
During that time of working in obscurity, he could have gotten discouraged or distracted, but he zeroed in on perfecting one task — kicking the football through the uprights consistently. In June 2025, he was signed by the New York Jets. Three months later, he was released. Three weeks after that, he was picked up by the Los Angeles Rams, whom he ended up helping advance to the NFC Championship Game.
Before Jesus returned to Heaven, He prepared His disciples for the future by commanding them to focus on one main task as long as they lived. He knew many worthy causes, as well as less important matters, would cry out for their attention, but He reminded them to always be mindful of their primary job: “Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age'” (Matthew 28:18-20).
When the devil tempted Jesus, he tried to get Jesus to focus on His empty stomach and other needs, but Jesus concentrated like a laser beam on eternal matters. He also urges us to follow his example. “Jesus answered, ‘It is written: “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God”‘” (Matthew 4:4).
If we want to have the same urgency as Christ and the apostles to be sustained by the Word alone and deliver the Gospel to others in need of the life-changing message, we need to look at everything from an eternal perspective.
We may enjoy earthly possessions for our short time on earth, but Christ’s spiritual world continues on and on with rewards even greater — and that perspective is what we need to live by and share. It’s vital to make decisions that align with Christ now before we meet the Lord after this life.
