“Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.’” — 1 Corinthians 15:33

There are many hockey phrases that are deceiving, with “buddy pass” being at the top of the list. While it might sound like you’re just making a pass to your buddy, what this term is really referring to is quite devastating.
In hockey, a buddy pass is the type of pass that puts a teammate in an extremely vulnerable spot. Initially the pass may have looked good, but in reality it’s leading someone straight into danger. An example of this is a slow or inaccurate pass across the middle of the ice. The recipient has no option but to reach for the puck with their head down, and unbeknownst to them, they are being led to get absolutely crushed by an opposing defender.
When a player makes enough buddy passes, they justifiably get labeled as a bad teammate. Good teammates, on the other hand, consistently make smart, safe passes that protect others on the ice.
In life, the friends we have resemble teammates. They are either making good passes that keep us out of harm’s way, or buddy passes that are leading us astray.
In 1 Corinthians 15:33, Paul is challenging the people to not listen to the bad theology some were pushing, and he makes this profound statement: “Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.’”
In sports, your teammates are usually chosen for you. However, when it comes to friends, we have the luxury of finalizing the roster. So set yourself up for success, and choose individuals who will lead you to Jesus.
