Daily Devotional: Wednesday, March 4 – Once Was, Still Is

“See how Jerusalem, once so faithful… Once like pure silver, you have become like worthless slag. Once so pure, you are now like watered-down wine.” — Isaiah 1:21a-22 (NLT)

Being in sports ministry for more than 20 years, I’ve experienced the joy of seeing the lost found, but also have the burden of seeing the found struggle to stay faithful. You see this same burden throughout all of Scripture, including the prophet Isaiah when he ministered to Jerusalem: “Once like pure silver, you have become like worthless slag. Once so pure, you are now like watered-down wine” (Isaiah 1:22, NLT).

Once was … and now is. How did they go from “once so faithful” (Isaiah 1:21a) to now being unfaithful? How did they go from surrendering to God to following the world and self? How did they go from a God-centered nation to a self-centered nation?

The same way we still do now.

Our priority of being a follower of Christ gets pushed to the side, and instead of picking up our Bible, we pick up the remote or phone. Instead of praying for people, we talk about people. Instead of knowing our worth is from God, we try to get validation from people.

So how do we get to once was and still is? It takes intentionality to be with God because we naturally drift away from Him. Here are five things we can pray each day to stay faithful: Lord, teach me Your ways; pour out Your wisdom; reveal any weaknesses; I surrender to Your will; let Your Word take root.
