“But above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath; but your yes is to be yes, and your no, no, so that you do not fall under judgment.” — James 5:12 (NASB)

My daughter and I went on a volleyball recruiting visit to a Division-II college toward the end of her junior year in high school. We walked through the beautiful campus, met some of the players on the team, and then took a tour of their gym.
After lunch with the coach, we went back to his office, where he made her a scholarship offer. She was talking to several other schools as well, so we asked for some time to pray and talk it over as a family.
Our daughter prayed and weighed her options. We returned to the university a few weeks later and she verbally committed to play volleyball there. The next day, however, as we were preparing to head home, she got a recruiting email from a coach in California. In the same conference as this Division-II program were several in Hawaii. If she played for this team, at least once a season, she would get to travel to the Hawaiian islands.
She hadn’t yet signed her letter of intent, so she wondered if she could back out of her verbal commitment. But we reminded her that she made a vow, and that as a Christian, her “yes is to be yes” (James 5:12, NASB). She ended up honoring her commitment, signing her letter of intent, enrolling, learning, making lifelong friends and graduating.
What have you committed to do? Is there a commitment you’re thinking of backing out of? Honor God by honoring your commitments.
