Super Bowl LX between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots generated an average of 124.9 million viewers as football fans from around the world tuned in to watch the NFL’s two best teams determine a champion. Still, it wasn’t a Super Bowl record for viewership. The big game did set one milestone, however.

A record $1.76 billion was bet on February’s Super Bowl, revealing one of the dark underbellies of the American cultural phenomenon known as Super Bowl Sunday. In fact, it is the single-largest sports betting event in the United States. Individual states are becoming increasingly receptive to sports betting as the cultural appetite for it continues to expand.

But Christ-followers should think critically about what the world blindly accepts as harmless. God has warned us in His Word about the dangers of pursuing money without providing a service, and He’s warned us about trusting in the money we do have instead of trusting in the One who graciously gave it to us.

There are practical reasons for this. Betting is a time-waster and a stress-producer. It’s highly addictive to the point of becoming all-consuming. Besides, “the house always wins.” In other words, the more you bet, the more likely you are to wind up in a deficit. Therefore, many sports bettors find themselves headlong in financial hardship.

Even so, the spiritual reasons to avoid gambling are far more serious. First of all, God desires the flourishing of His people, not financial hardship. And flourishing only comes as we faithfully steward the resources — financial or otherwise — that He has given us. Our money is His, and if we treat it like it’s ours, we are stealing.

Secondly, sports betting can lead our tender hearts astray as it subtly shifts our reliance from God and onto our finances. It becomes our source of security, our source of identity. Our dignity as a human being rises when our parlays hit and falls when they don’t. This grieves the heart of God.

Only a relationship with Jesus Christ truly satisfies our hearts. He came to earth as a human being. He lived a perfect life and paid the penalty of death on a cross. He rose again, announcing His victory over sin and death. And He did it all for me and for you, if you are in Christ.

So do not place your eternal trust in your finances, or in anything else that vies with Jesus for it. Your trust belongs to Him, because He’s the only One worth having it.
