Daily Devotional: Tuesday, May 12 – The Freedom Of Abiding

“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.” — John 15:4 (ESV)

A branch doesn’t have to try to produce fruit. It just stays connected to the vine and fruit comes naturally. You don’t manufacture grapes through willpower. They are produced as a result of staying attached to the source of life.

Similarly, you’re not responsible for manufacturing Godly character through sheer effort. You’re responsible for staying connected. For abiding. For being with Jesus. And when you do that, the fruit comes (John 15:4, above). Maybe not as fast as you want, maybe not as perfectly as you’d hope, but it comes genuinely.

In Titus 1:6-9, Paul lists off some qualifications for elders. Among the character traits he mentions are being self-controlled, upright, holy, disciplined and hospitable. He’s not giving us a to-do list; he’s describing what a life looks like when it is rooted in Jesus. When you’re staying close to Him. When you’re abiding.

Self-control grows when you’re connected to the One who brings order to chaos. Discipline emerges when you’re walking with the One who is faithful. Hospitality flows when you’ve experienced the welcome of Jesus and it overflows to others.

The character traits aren’t the goal; they’re the fruit. Abide and watch what fruit starts to grow.
