Daily Devotional: Thursday, May 28 – Caught Up In Success

“His delight is not in the strength of the horse, nor his pleasure in the legs of a man, but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love.” — Psalm 147:10-11 (ESV)

Scottie Scheffler, considered by most to be the best golfer in the world, pretty much has it all. He has money, success and fame, but his speech after his 2024 Masters win was a little different than what some expected. He answered questions by saying that “golf is a selfish sport” and “an endlessly not-satisfying career.” He said multiple times that his identity is secure in Christ and that winning or losing does not change that.

In a moment when no one would think twice if he gloated or spoke of how great he did, he turned it around and essentially said it was meaningless! Scottie didn’t talk about how much it meant to him or how excited he was to win; he just praised God and said the win doesn’t change what is important to him.

How often do we get caught up in our success? Where do you place your identity? The wins and losses pass away, but Christ’s victory on the cross is forever.

Jesus asks us an important question in Matthew 16 regarding our life here on earth: “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?” (Matthew 16:26, ESV). We will all have successes and failures here on earth, but it is our response that is most important. Will it become an idol or will you go to Christ for true fulfillment? Our lives on earth are short and the things we gain here are nothing in comparison to what Jesus gives us.

While many of us won’t win the Masters or be the No. 1 golfer in the world, we are still faced with the same challenge Scottie Scheffler is. Today, let’s not place our identity in what we can accomplish here on earth, but give ourselves up in love to Christ and bring Him the glory in all things.

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” — James 1:17, ESV
