In my second-to-last year of seminary, I walked nervously over to the office of Dr. Tony Evans. Once there, he asked me to be his new intern. Later, I became his pastoral assistant. He was the former team chaplain of the Dallas Cowboys and the current team chaplain for the Dallas Mavericks.

Not only did I work for Dr. Evans, he discipled and mentored me. My wife and I became like a part of their family. At his daughter’s wedding, Dr. Evans’ mom told me to get in a photo with all the Evans men. His kids became like my siblings. Mrs. Evans took my wife under her wings. Dr. Evans had a marked influence on my life. Recently, I preached at a conference and an attendee afterwards called me “little Tony.”

It’s no surprise, then, that I became the team chaplain for the Houston Rockets and am now the team chaplain for the Iowa Wolves — because Dr. Evans was an NBA team chaplain. It’s no surprise that I preach expository sermons and use many illustrations and analogies — like Dr. Evans. Jesus says in Luke 6:40 (above) that the student will become like the teacher. The mentee will become like the mentor.

If you have a mentor, know that they are going to rub off on you. If you don’t have a mentor, choose one wisely, because you will become like them. But above all, follow Jesus closely so you will become like Him — that’s the ultimate goal.

— Ikki Soma, Iowa Wolves chaplain
