In the 1968 Summer Olympics, 75 runners began the men’s marathon (26.2 miles) in Mexico City. Due to the high altitude (7,349 feet above sea level), several runners cramped up, and 18 of the 75 runners who began the race did not finish. Tanzania runner John Stephen Akhwari was one of those runners who cramped; however, he kept running.

Just shy of the halfway mark, a collision with another runner caused Akhwari to badly injure his shoulder and dislocate his knee. Still, he kept running. He would finish the race in 57th place, the final runner to cross the finish line. His time was more than an hour behind winner Mamo Wolde from Ethiopia.

Akhwari’s efforts were noted by international media as an example of the “Olympic spirit.” Later, when a reporter asked Akhwari why he kept running when he had no chance to win, Akhwari replied, “My country did not send me 5,000 miles to start the race; they sent me 5,000 miles to finish the race.”

Shortly before his death, in looking back over his life, the apostle Paul cited the spirit of perseverance in his life when he wrote, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7). In John 19:30, after enduring six hours on the cross, Jesus declared His work complete: “It is finished.”

Jesus calls upon His followers to persevere as we are sent into the world, just as He did when He was sent into the world (John 17:15-18).
