Performance in sports is often summarized statistically, in one way or another. Successes compared to failures, wins compared to losses, highs compared to lows, and the list goes on. We tend to categorize an extended period of losses or lows as a “slump.” We could argue a slump is normal and expected and part of being an athlete, but we also see the mental and physical effects it can and does have on the athlete going through it.

Outside of athletics, “slumps” and “storms” occur regularly in everyday life. There is a never-ending list of painful and hard situations we are susceptible to on this side of Heaven. Jesus warns of this in John 16:33 when He says, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” A heavy warning followed by a seemingly simple command.

But why would He allow trouble if He could prevent it? Sometimes God stretches us beyond what we want or think we can handle to give us a fresh revelation of who He is. A slump in our sport that has started to overtake our identity may be God’s way of refocusing our heart and mind to glorify Him and not ourselves. A storm in life may result in the slowing down of busyness and distraction, and thus lead to full reliance and dependence on Him.

In this world we will have trouble, but take heart. He has overcome the world.
