My wife was a two-time All-American in track and field at the University of Texas at Arlington. When we met working for the same urban ministry in 1996, she was attempting to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Trials. Though she qualified for and competed in the long jump at the 1995 U.S. Track and Field Championships, she narrowly missed qualifying for the 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials.

She never made an Olympic team, but she still holds the school record in the long jump. She has been in the record books at UT-Arlington for more than three decades. She is also third in the triple jump and 4x400m relay.

But my wife is a follower of Jesus Christ and she cares more that her name is recorded in the Book of Heaven than in her college’s record book.

In Luke 10, Jesus sends out 72 of His followers to go tell others about Him. When they come back, they have amazing reports of what they’ve accomplished. Jesus tells them not to rejoice that demonic spirits submit to them, but instead to rejoice that their names are registered in Heaven (v. 20, above). Their standing before God in eternity is secure.

Today, are you rejoicing in your athletic accomplishments or school records? Or maybe you have nothing to rejoice about. If you’ve placed your faith in Christ, rejoice that your name is recorded in the Book of Heaven! Rejoice by telling others about Jesus and His love for them.
