With 2024 coming to a close, Sports Spectrum is highlighting our most-viewed stories of the year.
Everyone loves an underdog story, and Brock Purdy’s is one of the best. He was the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, but became the 49ers’ starting quarterback by the end of his first season, and may have led the team to the Super Bowl had it not been for an elbow injury in the NFC Championship Game. He responded in 2023-24 by firmly taking over San Francisco’s QB1 role, becoming an NFL MVP finalist, and leading the 49ers through the NFC title game into Super Bowl LVIII.
The 49ers found themselves down by 17 points at halftime of that NFC Championship Game on Jan. 28, 2024, but Purdy helped spur a comeback that tied for the largest in the history of the NFC championship. After the game, Purdy was asked how his personal journey got him ready for not only that game, but the second half in particular. He was quick to credit God.
“Honestly, I think it’s just a testament to God and where He’s taken me in life,” Purdy said. “I’ve never been the biggest, the fastest, the strongest, or any of that. I feel like I’ve always had to sort of fight for what I get and work for what I get. But God’s always given me an opportunity, whether that was in high school, college and then obviously in the NFL. Getting drafted last, people overlook you and all that kind of stuff, and then all you need is an opportunity and watch and see what He does. I put my faith and trust in Him and He’s gotten me where I’m at.
“So when I’m down 17 at half, honestly, I’m just thinking, ‘All right God, You’ve taken me here, and win or lose, I’m going to glorify You.’ That’s my peace, that’s the joy, that’s the steadfastness — that’s where I get it from. And that’s the honest truth. So I leaned into that and sure enough, we were able to come back.”
Purdy’s inspired play made him one of the biggest stars heading into Super Bowl LVIII against the Kansas City Chiefs, and Sports Spectrum’s story about Purdy glorifying God while leading the 49ers to the Super Bowl was widely read in the two-week build-up to the big game in Las Vegas. It ends the year ranked No. 2 among our most-viewed stories in 2024:
