QB Bo Nix leads Denver Broncos to incredible 4th-quarter comeback: ‘Thank You, Lord’

In one of the wildest NFL games in recent memory, the Broncos scored all 33 of their points in the fourth quarter to come from behind and defeat the New York Giants, 33-32, on Sunday in Denver.

Denver trailed 19-0 after three quarters, and still trailed 26-8 with just more than five minutes remaining. Yet on the back of second-year quarterback Bo Nix, the Broncos surged in front and won on a 39-yard field goal as time expired. The team’s 33 fourth-quarter points are a franchise record for the most points in a quarter (and matched the second-most in a quarter in NFL history).

Nix overcame a subpar start to the game to score four total touchdowns — the first time in NFL history that a player rushed for two and passed for two in the final quarter. He finished with 279 passing yards on 27 completions (and a career-high 50 attempts) and 48 rushing yards on five carries.

Denver’s rally began with a Nix pass into the end zone that was nearly intercepted, ricocheted off a defender, and was snagged by receiver Troy Franklin for a 2-yard score.

The Giants answered with a ricocheted touchdown of their own, but the Broncos responded with a 74-yard drive that was capped off by Nix’s first rushing touchdown of the day from 7 yards out. With the two-point conversion, Denver had cut the lead to 10.

Following an interception, the Broncos had the ball at New York’s 19-yard line, and four plays later, Nix’s second touchdown pass of the quarter trimmed the lead to three. Denver then forced a quick three-and-out. With 1:51 left, Nix scampered 18 yards for a go-ahead score.

The theatrics weren’t quite complete, however, as New York answered with another quick touchdown of its own with 37 seconds remaining. On the ensuing drive, two clutch completions of more than 20 yards from Nix put the Broncos in position for the game-winning kick from Wil Lutz.

In his postgame press conference, Nix was asked was what going through his mind as Lutz’s kick went through the uprights.

“A lot,” Nix said. “‘Thank You, Lord, for putting me in this position, choosing me to be the quarterback of this team, and giving us the opportunity to win a game like that.’ [Broncos tight end] Evan [Engram] said it best in the locker room: He chose us for a time like that. I’m just very thankful and very relieved.”

Nix continued later, “We talked about yesterday ‘As iron sharpens iron, so does a man sharpen another.’ You know, we had every right to quit. Every right to just stop playing with each other. But for some reason, we don’t have those guys. We have guys that continue to battle, continue to play really hard.”

Nix impressed in his rookie season with the Broncos a year ago, passing for 3,775 yards with 29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while adding four rushing scores. The No. 12 overall pick out of Oregon also led Denver to a 10-7 record and a berth in the playoffs for the first time since winning the Super Bowl in 2015 (a team honored at halftime on Sunday).

More individual and team success look to be on the horizon this season, as Nix has amassed 1,556 yards and 11 passing touchdowns against only four interceptions while leading his team to the top of the AFC West with a 5-2 record.

Yet throughout his time in the national spotlight as a college football and NFL star, Nix has stayed grounded by his faith in Christ. During games, the 25-year-old wears tape on his left wrist with a cross drawn on it, as well as a blue and orange bracelet that cites the Bible verse Romans 10:10. His right thigh pad also displays a cross.

In his very first press conference in the NFL, after being drafted by the Broncos, Nix spoke boldly about his faith.

“My faith is really important to me,” he said. “I’ve always been a faith-based person. I believe that God has a plan for me and my life. I truly believe that He has set this path in front of me, and He put me here in Denver for a reason.

“… You just have to trust and believe that His plans are higher than your ways. So that’s what I truly believe. I’m a perfect example of that. If you haven’t seen it already, you can look at my story and know that He has an individual plan for each one of our lives. He sets it out in front of us, and all we have to do is follow.”

In his Instagram bio, Nix writes that “Jesus saves” and cites his favorite Bible verse, Colossians 3:23.

In 2020, Nix was playing college football at Auburn (where he played his first three collegiate seasons before transferring to Oregon). When the COVID pandemic descended on the world, Nix posted on Instagram about why he displays a cross during games.

“The cross I wear on my wrist symbolizes where I find my true joy,” he captioned his post in part. “It doesn’t come from success on or off the field. It comes from the good news of Jesus Christ and actively pursuing a relationship with Him. He achieved the ultimate victory when He was crucified on the cross for the sins of every person on earth and then rose from the grave after three days.

“… In a time filled with uncertainty, chaos, and distraction, it is as important as ever to lean on the cross. What better time than now to make a decision to put your trust in Him?”

Nix and his wife, Izzy, further expressed their faith by citing Jeremiah 1:5 in their recent announcement that they are expecting their first child. The couple met at Auburn.

Nix knows that, win or lose, God has called him to glorify His name as an NFL quarterback, as a husband, and soon as a father.

And with the Dallas Cowboys (3-3-1) coming to Denver this Sunday, Nix will have another opportunity to give God glory as the NFL world watches. Kickoff between the Cowboys and Broncos is set for 4:25 p.m. ET.
