“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” – Ephesians 4:29

Many of us who grew up playing sports still enjoy watching games, whether it is our children playing or our favorite team.  Do you think your words during these games reflects this verse?  I must confess that my words are not always aligned with this verse. I try to read or think about this verse before watching my children play sports.

The reason that we struggle in this way is that we are focused on ourselves …. not God or those playing. 

When we put this verse into practice, our focus is on building others up according to their needs, not what I think of the play on the field or court or the performance of the referee.  It is not about me!

Here is the harsh reality for those of us who want to share the Good News frequently: Our Christianity is on display.  Whether as a participant or a fan of a game, our words should be filled with grace.  Yes, we all know how tough that can be.  In Colossians 4:5-6, Paul describes this grace and would encourage us how to be a fan at your next ball game:  Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

I challenge you – and myself – to let our conversations be seasoned with grace, building others up according to their needs.
