Ohio State wrestler Kyle Snyder says his 'competence comes from the Lord'

Ohio State’s senior wrestler Kyle Snyder is once again a champion.

Snyder defeated Adam Coon of Michigan 4-2, in sudden victory, for his third Big Ten conference title. The win was a rematch of his only loss of the season to Coon on Feb. 12, which was also his first defeat in college competition since 2015.

The individual title for Snyder helped the Buckeyes to the 2018 Big Ten Wrestling Championships title on Sunday with a team score of 164.5. This is Ohio State’s second-straight conference title and fifth overall.

Snyder is used to living in the winners circle. In 2016, he became the youngest Olympic champion in U.S. history at 20, defeating Khetag Goziumov of Azerbaijan 2-1 for gold at 97 kilograms during the men’s freestyle tournament.

“I don’t really have too big of a secret,” Snyder said to the Associated Press. “I listen to my coaches. I train as hard as I possibly can.

“I think, if anything, my secret is that instead of thinking about winning and thinking about gold medals and stuff like that, I try to value just my effort, value my improvement and value the love that I have for the sport. That drives me every day.”

But what drives Snyder even more is his faith in Christ. After winning the Big Ten title, he posted on his Twitter account a verse from 2 Corinthians 3:5 stating that his competence comes from the Lord.

“Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God.” – 2 Corinthians 3:5

The next time Snyder hits the mat will be in the NCAA Tournament, which begins March 15.
