As we walk in God’s general will, how do we know when we’re being called to something specific? How does God lead us?

Years ago, a Jesus-following friend of mine told me something I strongly disagreed with. He said we all do what we want, that every person is just serving themselves. If I’m a Christian, how can that be? Shouldn’t I be trying to do what God wants, not what I want?

Diving into the Scriptures, though, we get an idea of how God actually changes us. He doesn’t simply change our behavior, He changes what we want, and then our actions follow suit and are pleasing to Him.

Think of it like a coach who is teaching us a new formation, strategy or way of playing. First, he tells us where to go and how to do it. For teams that do well, though, it doesn’t stop there. They begin to believe together that this is the best way for them to operate, and they work hard to passionately carry out their roles.

We all serve our desires. When our desire is for something other than God’s will, we’re the one in the wrong and we should ask Him to change what we want. God doesn’t give us whatever we desire. He gives us the very desires for our hearts, so that we want to live differently.
