Be careful about who you allow to influence your thinking, especially when it comes to God and His Word. Jesus Christ warned His followers in Matthew 7:15-17, “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. … Every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.”
In Biblical terms, a prophet is not someone who predicts the future. A prophet is someone who claims to be speaking for the Lord. How do you know if someone is a false prophet? Deuteronomy 18:21-22 says, “You may say to yourselves, ‘How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the Lord?’ If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord does not take place or come true, that is a message the Lord has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously, so do not be alarmed.”
There have always been and will always be false prophets. It’s been Satan’s objective from the beginning to distort the Word of God and lead people away from Him. Regarding the devil, Jesus said, “[T]here is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies” (John 8:44).
That’s why Peter teaches, “But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies. … Many will follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way of truth into disrepute” (2 Peter 2:1-2).
