“Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.” — Psalm 34:8

Growing up, we said a simple grace before meals: “God is great, God is good. Let us thank Him for our food. Amen.” Sadly, I don’t think about God’s goodness enough. Yet, Scripture talks about it a lot. We’re told to taste and see that the Lord is good (Psalm 34:8) and that God’s goodness chases after us (Psalm 23:6)!

I admit I often take God’s goodness for granted, and when my circumstances are difficult, I doubt that He is actually good. However, goodness is part of God’s character. He is good even when my circumstances are not. When I go through difficult times, when I work hard and do not reap the benefits, and when my prayers seem to go unanswered, God remains good. Knowing this helps me press on even when I want to throw in the towel and quit.

We see God’s goodness in His actions. He does good things for us. Most significantly, He sent Jesus to pay for our sins so we could enter into a relationship with Him. From providing needed finances to healing our injuries, God continues to shower His goodness on us.

Chris Tomlin highlighted God’s goodness in a song when he sang, “You’re a good, good Father. It’s who You are … and I’m loved by You.” Let us not take God’s goodness for granted. Look around. Notice where His goodness is showing up, and thank Him for His goodness toward you.
