Daily Devotional: Wednesday, January 24 - God Only Throws Strikes

“In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever. This is the meaning of the vision of the rock cut out of a mountain, but not by human hands — a rock that broke the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold to pieces. The great God has shown the king what will take place in the future. The dream is true and its interpretation is trustworthy.” — Daniel 2:44-45

My spiritual mom, Sylvia Stewart, is Dr. Tony Evans’ executive administrative assistant — and also an avid bowler. I took some students from our church to the bowling alley one evening and Sylvia was there with her bowling team. While we were just trying to keep the ball out of the gutter, she kept throwing strike after strike. The pins were no match for her bowling ball.

In Daniel 2, King Nebuchadnezzar, who was the most powerful king in the world at the time, had a dream about a large statue that represented his kingdom and all the kingdoms that would come after his. A stone was cut out from a mountain, hit the 10 toes of the statue and demolished it. The stone in the dream represented the Kingdom of Jesus Christ that will one day smash all other kingdoms on earth. The large mountain was the Kingdom of God, God’s comprehensive rule over all of creation.

Like the bowling ball that knocks down all 10 pins for a strike, Christ’s Kingdom will topple all earthly kingdoms. Every earthly nation, kingdom, corporation and organization — no matter how great — will one day cease to exist, but Christ’s Kingdom will exist forever.

We serve a God who only throws strikes. His Kingdom will dominate and outlast all earthly kingdoms. So we have a choice: Invest our time, energy and resources in the pins (the kingdoms of this world) or the ball (God’s eternal Kingdom). Where will you invest today?
