Daily Devotional: Thursday, February 8 - Setting Up The Play

“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” — Proverbs 16:9

As a high school basketball coach, having a winning game plan was first priority. A big part of that winning game plan was having a great team offense.

We worked every day on “setting up” different plays. I sometimes ran a particular offense where the post players started out wide and the guards positioned themselves under the basket. When the point guard crossed half-court and triggered the start of the play, there were screens, hard cuts and even a few “fake” cuts that really didn’t mean anything. The ultimate goal was to eventually get every player into position so that we could score. Those post players ended up where they needed to be, same with the guards. There was a plan to all that movement and when those individual skill sets all came together to run the play and we were successful, it was beautiful.

And timing was everything.

God does the same thing for you and me: He positioned us in the right spot and the right time even before we were born. He planned our destiny in advance. He has set us up for victory. “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10).

Not only did He plan our destiny in advance, Proverbs 16:9 (above) tells us that the Lord establishes our steps. He has a game plan and, unlike ours, His plan never fails. God has plans and purposes for us that we cannot even imagine! “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us” (Ephesians 3:20).

God sees your tomorrow already. He sees the end from the beginning. He already knows what decisions, choices and setbacks you will have. Of course, we all have challenges and times when we just flat out fail. But just like a missed shot on a beautifully drawn-up, designed play, you will regroup and move one step closer to your ultimate goal if you stay in the game.

So I challenge us all today: Let’s get in position for the play God is calling in our lives. Be sensitive to His timing and seek His wisdom daily. We are all on the same team working together, each playing a role in God’s grand game plan.
