Daily Devotional: Wednesday, January 29 - Always Be Ready

“But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect…” — 1 Peter 3:15

My younger daughter made the varsity volleyball team as a sophomore at one of the largest high schools in greater Houston. Starting ahead of her was a very talented upperclassman. My daughter was a bit frustrated that she wasn’t starting, but I reminded her to be ready because you never know when an opportunity will come.

Now, it wasn’t quite like Tom Brady backing up Drew Bledsoe for the New England Patriots. It was only high school volleyball, but like Brady was ready in 2001, my daughter was ready. In an early district match, the upperclassman starting ahead of her severely sprained her ankle. The coach signaled for my daughter, she jumped right in, and played very well. She was ready and she never looked back.

From that match on, my daughter was the starter for the next three seasons, winning several district awards, and eventually becoming the team captain. She was even recruited to play volleyball in college — all because she was ready.

Just like a second- or third-string athlete should always be ready to play or start, we as Christians should always be ready to share our faith (1 Peter 3:15, above). We should be ready to give an answer for the reason of our hope. We should always be ready to tell people about Jesus Christ.

And being ready to share our faith is infinitely greater than being ready to play, because a person’s eternal destiny may be at stake if we aren’t ready.
