Christian Benford believed he belonged in the NFL even before the Buffalo Bills drafted him in 2022. The fact that he was a sixth-round pick — 185th overall, to be exact — coming from an FCS program in Villanova didn’t faze him.
The cornerback contributed 24 tackles and an interception in nine games as a rookie. He became a starter in Year 2 and has played 30 games over the past two seasons.

In 2024, Benford registered a career-high 64 tackles and the first sack of his career, while picking off two passes and forcing two fumbles for the second year in a row. Buffalo finished 13-4 and won the AFC East for the fifth straight season, eventually falling to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game.
The Bills then spent the offseason bolstering their defense. They signed five-time Pro Bowler Joey Bosa and used their first five picks in April’s draft on that side of the ball.
Entering his fourth season and the recipient of a new four-year contract extension in April, Benford is establishing himself as one of the unit’s leaders. He said during media availability last week that he sees it as a natural byproduct of his strong faith in God, which is the guiding force of his life.
“All in all, making sure I’m doing the Lord’s work, you know what I’m saying?” Benford said. “Making sure I’m spreading Jesus’ light through me to others. … That’s really what my main focus is: prioritizing being a man of God.”

Benford’s faith is also on display through his social media. The first thing in his Instagram bio is “God 1st,” and he often references his faith in captions for his posts.

During the press conference, he explained that he strives to keep an open mind and be there to listen whenever teammates are looking for someone to talk to. Benford believes teams that have success love each other well. He just wants teammates to know he has their back.
“Some people just need somebody to listen to them rather than just give them advice,” he told reporters. “I wasn’t really expecting it. I was just doing it because that’s my journey as a man of God: to continue my way of Christ and love one another as Jesus loved us.”
HBO’s “Hard Knocks” recently featured a special moment highlighting Benford living out his faith. He comforted and prayed for first-round pick Max Hairston after Hairston suffered a knee injury in practice.
Plenty of talk about Christian Benford becoming a leader within the #Bills locker room. But his consolation of Max Hairston immediately following the rookie sustaining a knee injury blew me away. God heals and Benford knows it #BillsMafia #HardKnocks pic.twitter.com/f7zq8yYS9y

Benford admitted that being a vocal leader isn’t always easy for him. There are times when he doesn’t feel like he has anything to say. That’s when he turns to the Lord, asking for wisdom and guidance.
“I learned that sometimes you don’t got the answer, but God will give you the answer that they need. … Sometimes a quick little prayer, like, ‘God, give me wisdom, give me eye opening, to help this individual,'” he told the media. “I really need to rely on God because God will give me everything that I need.”
The Bills visit the Chicago Bears in their second preseason game at 8 p.m. ET Saturday. They wrap up the preseason against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Aug. 23. Buffalo’s season opener will be on “Sunday Night Football” against the Baltimore Ravens, a rematch of last season’s dramatic divisional-round playoff game.
