Athletes, coaches, politicians and even pastors often receive a platform from which they can express themselves, and lots of people will listen. Many use their platform for good. But even though we may think highly of them, we must remember they’re not perfect.

Be extremely careful of who you allow to influence your thinking, especially when it comes to God and His Word. Jesus warned all His believers in Matthew 7:15-16a, “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them.”

A prophet, in Biblical terms, was not someone who could foresee the future; it was someone who claimed to speak for the Lord. If the Lord told him about future events, that’s what he would proclaim. But they were not predicting; they were simply relaying what God had said.

How do you know if someone you are listening to is a false prophet? Deuteronomy 18:22a says, “If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord does not take place or come true, that is a message the Lord has not spoken.” It’s been said that the best way to spot a counterfeit is to be deeply familiar with the real thing. Another saying is that 99% of the truth is a lie, and 101% of the truth is also a lie!

How well do you know and understand the Word of God? How easy is it for you to be led astray by false teaching?

— Jerry Birch, Cleveland Cavaliers chaplain
