“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” — 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

In 1990, the Minnesota Twins finished in last place in the American League West and had the fourth-fewest wins in Major League Baseball. In a shocking turn of events, the Twins won the World Series in dramatic fashion in 1991 by defeating the Atlanta Braves. Game 7 of the World Series was one for the ages as Jack Morris pitched 10 innings to win 1-0. He threw more than 120 pitches and earned World Series MVP honors.
Interestingly, the Braves also arrived with their own worst-to-first story and John Smoltz almost matched Morris pitch-for-pitch in the tense battle for the championship.
Such true stories remind us to keep on swinging for the fences because you never know what your story will be.
Though we don’t understand why hard seasons of life happen, it’s good to remember we have a God who reaches down from Heaven, caring for people and also sending rain to relieve us when we need it the most. Long ago, the Israelites learned to appreciate the Lord after He delivered them from 70 years of captivity at the hands of the Babylonians. They celebrated for months and it seemed unbelievable (Psalm 126:1-3).
For so long, Daniel and other Jewish people longed to be free and asked God to grant mercy and keep His promise to restore the nation and bring them back to the Promised Land. During the long ordeal, Daniel kept on praying and trusting God in spite of his doubts and fears. The Lord’s faithfulness to Abraham, Moses, Esther and others in the past was a testimony that spoke loudly to Daniel and the people of his day. In turn, we can look back and see how Daniel outlived several wicked kings and prospered in spite of difficult circumstances. As Daniel lived with courage and faced the lions, we too can overcome when we trust in our loving and faithful God.
Paul knew God helped him keep going and preaching after torture and all kinds of pain and heartache, and Paul inspired others through his words and example to be strong (2 Corinthians 1:3-4, above). When we go through tough times, we can become people of greater character because of them, and can learn to encourage others who go through similar challenges and help them endure hardships as we did.
