When Magic Johnson stepped down from his role as the president of basketball operations for the Los Angeles Lakers in April, it was not just so he could relax more. Johnson is using his newfound time to serve more in his church and community.

His wife, Cookie, started attending West Angeles Church of God in Christ in L.A. almost 20 years ago. Johnson started going with her soon after and recently shared in a public setting that his prayer life is stronger than before, according to Charisma News.
“It’s truly a blessing when you know what direction you’re going in,” Johnson said. “It’s such a change for me because now when I go to speak to corporations, I lead off by praising the Lord … You can touch somebody else to praise the Lord.”

Johnson and West Angeles COGIC pastor Bishop Charles E. Blake launched an initiative back in 2017 to equip African-American men to succeed in life. They also worked together on plans for the West Angeles Family Life Center, which will offer development programs for inner-city families once it is completed.
Johnson also recently visited a hospital in Newark, N.J., with a greenhouse helping promote wellness in the community.
“It’s really amazing what the hospital is doing for the community,” Johnson told the Associated Press. “That’s what I’m all about. I’ve been around the country doing the same thing, and that’s what God has called me to do. I just want to go out and bless other people.”
