Hockey is a big deal in northern U.S. states and Canada. Many children grow up following their favorite hockey teams and dreaming about possibly being a hockey player when they get older. Therefore, kids who have to spend extended time in the hospital really appreciate visits from hockey stars.
Recently, the Boston Bruins put on their jersyes but exchanged their helmets for Santa Claus hats or reindeer headbands and visited five children’s hospitals in the area. They brought presents and a lot of happiness and encouragement to needy children.
We may not be famous like professional athletes, but we too can brighten someone’s holidays by visiting nursing homes, children’s hospitals, jails and prisons with words of encouragement in a hurting world. We could bring gifts, share Bible verses, read Christmas stories, and sing songs for them. Christmas carols are precious because we yearn for peace in a world filled with trouble.
Though some problems will persist, God gives peace of mind to us when we reflect upon our sins being forgiven based upon everything Jesus did when He came into the world the first time some 2,000 years ago. He came for a special purpose when He was born on that holy night and the angels rejoiced in His birth. “Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests'” (Luke 2:13-14).
In addition to peace, we need hope in a time when many people have given up on fulfilling dreams or feel hopeless due to overwhelming pain and heartache. Though darkness and gloom surround us, Jesus shines forth from Heaven to earth to give us everlasting hope. As Christmas comes every year, Jesus is constantly inspiring us and lifting us up into a better frame of mind. Christ reminds us that He was born to redeem us. Even though we may feel unworthy of His love, Christ gives us eternal confidence in a bright future.
God also gives us a heart full of joy — now and forever — because Jesus fulfills every promise made by the Heavenly Father. Jesus walks with us daily through this cruel and corrupt world by the Holy Spirit and carries us when we’re too weak to walk and too upset to deal with life. Jesus is the light of eternal salvation and gives joy that the devil can’t snatch away from us.
That’s why Simeon celebrated when he saw baby Jesus. “For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel” (Luke 2:30-32).
Let us all celebrate our dear Savior’s birth!
