“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” — Proverbs 16:9

In the game of basketball, one of the most valuable skills a player can possess is the ability to pivot. When you find yourself facing a defender or trapped in a tight situation, a pivot allows you to change direction while maintaining your balance and control. It’s a move that requires agility, quick thinking, and the willingness to adapt.
Similarly, in our spiritual journey, there are moments when we must embrace the concept of pivoting.
As athletes and coaches, we often have our own plans, strategies and dreams. We set goals, create detailed game plans, and envision success on the court. But what happens when those plans don’t align with God’s purpose for our lives? Sometimes, despite our best efforts, circumstances change, doors close, or challenges arise that force us to shift our focus and change our direction.
In those moments, we must remember that God is the ultimate orchestrator of our steps. He sees the bigger picture and knows what is best for us. Jeremiah 29:11 (NLT) tells us, “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ says the Lord. ‘They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.'”
We may encounter setbacks, injuries or unexpected turns, but God can use those moments to redirect us toward His perfect plan. Think about the story of Joseph in the Bible (Genesis 37-50). He had dreams of greatness, but his path to success was far from straightforward. Joseph faced betrayal, slavery and imprisonment. His circumstances seemed to be moving him further away from his dreams. However, God was using those trials to mold and shape Joseph into the person he needed to be. In the end, Joseph’s pivot led him to a position of great influence and allowed him to save his family and an entire nation from famine.
Likewise, in your sports journey and in life, there will be times when you face unexpected challenges or closed doors. It’s in those moments that you must trust in God’s sovereignty and be willing to pivot. Instead of dwelling on what didn’t work out or getting discouraged, seek God’s guidance and surrender your plans to Him.
Remember, a pivot requires agility and quick thinking. When God prompts you to pivot, be ready to adapt and embrace the change. It may involve letting go of certain aspirations, reevaluating your priorities, or pursuing a different path altogether. Trust that God’s plan is far greater than anything you can imagine, and He will lead you in the right direction.
Today, reflect on any areas in your life where you may need to pivot. Are there dreams or plans you’ve been holding onto tightly, but you feel God is calling you to a different path? Are there circumstances that require a change in direction? Surrender those things to God, and trust that He will establish your steps. Remember, sometimes you’ve got to pivot, and it’s in those moments of surrender that God can lead you to greater blessings and fulfillment.
Prayer: Dear God, thank You for being the ultimate Guide in my life. Help me to trust in Your plans and be willing to pivot when necessary. Give me the wisdom to discern Your leading and the courage to adapt to change. May I find peace and purpose in surrendering my plans to Your perfect will. In Jesus’ name, amen.
