Daily Devotional: Wednesday, June 19 - Choose A Narrative

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” — 2 Timothy 3:16-17

There is a particular narrative, or narratives, running or ruining our lives — stories we have learned from experiences, from our culture, or from how we have been raised. These narratives play in the background of our lives and are one of the primary ways we are influenced to see and live in the world.

A potentially dominant negative narrative we can learn from sports is that worth is tied to performance — if I play well, then I am loved. In this narrative you are only as good as your last performance. Therefore, you live in the cyclic reality and stress of measuring up to a particular standard set by someone for validation and love.

This narrative, over time, gets placed on our view of God. When it does, our commitment and perceived love from God is tied to what we do for Him and not in His unconditional love.

The earliest followers of Jesus were committed to the apostles’ teaching (Acts 2:42). They were committed to being taught a new narrative about who God is, who they were through His love, and how that changes the way they should live. In 2 Timothy 3:14-17, we’re told the Scriptures are able to make us wise and are “useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

His Word will expose the false narratives ruining our lives and instead train us to live God’s way. Therefore, the question becomes: Which narrative are you going to commit to?
