Daily Devotional: Wednesday, September 18 - Grace Overflowing

“The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners — of whom I am the worst.” — 1 Timothy 1:14-15

In December 2023, an Eastern Michigan defensive back started a postgame fight when he punched a South Alabama player. The next day, he issued a statement apologizing to his family, team, the individual he hit, and the opposing team. Both the player who was punched and his coach accepted the apology.

I am sure each of us has experienced something similar: We do or say something that causes hurt and pain to another person or displeases God. We want to take our words or actions back, but that is impossible.

The apostle Paul likely felt that way too. Before coming to faith, he admitted to being a blasphemer, persecutor and violent man. He needed to be forgiven. After experiencing God’s forgiveness, his life radically changed. He became a leader of the early Church and continues to be a role model to many today. He never forgot his sinfulness and he rejoiced in his forgiveness.

In 1 Timothy, Paul recounts his former life and the grace, love and forgiveness that are found in Christ. He admitted, “Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners — of whom I am the worst” (1:15). Paul understood the truth of his sin and of God’s forgiveness through Christ’s sacrifice on the cross.

We, too, need to acknowledge our sin to the Lord and, if appropriate, to those we have hurt. Then we can rest in the fact that we are forgiven.
