“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.” (1 John 3:1-2)
Know Your Identity
Identity is a huge part of sports. Each player on a team must understand the role he or she is asked to play for the team to be successful. Every great team has stars but also has players that simply did their jobs while at the same time allowing the stars to do their jobs well too. Even in individual sports like golf and tennis, it is important for players to know their strengths and weaknesses so that they can make the most of their skill set.
In our walk with Christ, we sometimes forget what our identity is. We get so invested in our job or a team we root for or something else, that we become defined by something of this earth rather than our relationship with God. We lose sight of the fact that at the end of the day, our identity is rooted in being a child of God above all else.
Do we ever take a moment and reflect on what it really means to be a child of God? Isn’t it amazing that the all-powerful, all-knowing, creator of the universe loves us, treasures us, and wants to have a relationship with us? Being a child of God is not just something that we need to remember but also something that we should take great joy in!
Best of all, being a child of God is not an exclusive club; everyone gets to join! When we remember that other people are children of God too, it becomes much easier to share God’s love and affection with them.
Never forget your identity!
