“Be very careful, then, how you live — not as unwise but as wise.” Ephesians 5:15

Discovering Character and Devotion

Few would disagree with me that suffering is a major part of sport. I remember watching the Davis Cup tennis final where Argentina lost against Spain. Suffering was clear throughout the final match. Perseverance through suffering was the key to success. Sport without suffering becomes a recreational game. Sport without suffering results in a shallow appreciation of skill, movement and synchronization. Without suffering, sport in its essence would not be discovered. Without suffering, a person’s character in its core would not be discovered. Without suffering for Christ, the measurement of devotion towards Jesus would not be discovered.

Believers of Christ tend to believe that a life that Christ wants for them is a life that consists only of comfort, peace and tranquility, but we often forget that discomfort and suffering also forms part of the abundant life of Christ and that discomfort and suffering are not necessarily something negative–as suffering can often help us in getting rid of our selfish desires.

It is time to get a bit uncomfortable, and to give some of your time and self for others. And as a gift from God, ask Him to reveal the true core of your character.
