“Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock … it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” — Matthew 7:24-29
Wisdom
Sometimes you hear an athlete being described as “coachable.” This means that they are open to instruction and focused on improving. Although they may already have great talent, coachable athletes do not let an ego get in the way of learning more. Athletes who do not listen to a coach’s instruction usually do not get the opportunity to play.
Jesus uses the example of building a house (in Matthew 7) to demonstrate the difference between those who listen and obey His instructions and those who do not. He compares a wise man to one who builds a house on a rock, while a fool builds his house on sand. When the storm comes, only the house built on a firm foundation remains.
So how can a Christian show that he is coachable? The answer is by following the instructions of God. The Bible is full of instructions for living a life of wisdom. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” By following God’s instructions, “You will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and of man” (Proverbs 3:4).
On whose knowledge and strength do you rely? By listening to and obeying the Lord’s instructions, you can build a strong foundation that is able to withstand life’s storms.
